(Singapore, 18 Jan 2025) Beijing’s Chaoyang District has unveiled ambitious plans to transform its waterfront areas into a globally recognized economic zone, aiming to connect the Ba River and Liangma River into a thriving hub for commerce, culture, and innovation.
Dubbed the “Two Rivers, One Belt” initiative, this project seeks to capitalize on the district’s rich water resources and strategic location to foster urban renewal and enhance accessibility. The initiative will connect the rivers with a 22-kilometer scenic cruise route from Jiuxianqiao to the city’s sub-center, promising an enriched urban living and business environment.
The project builds upon decades of urban development that have seen waterfront cities worldwide, such as Paris along the Seine, leverage their locales for added economic and cultural value. THe government of Chaoyang plan to involve extensive revitalization efforts, including the creation of 23 kilometers of scenic corridors along the Empress Dowager Xiao River, Liangma River, Ba River, and Tonghui Canal.
Revitalization Efforts and Future Plans
Chaoyang District’s approach focuses on more than just aesthetics. By enhancing the connectivity and accessibility of its waterfronts, the district aims to boost economic activity, revitalize local industries, and increase consumption. The Liangma River is set to receive significant upgrades, extending its charm with a new scenic cruise route that promises a unique blend of natural beauty and urban sophistication.
The Ba River will see expedited construction efforts, with plans to open a continuous 15-kilometer yacht route that will connect the newly renovated areas to the city’s sub-center, further enhancing the district’s appeal to tourists and investors alike.
Cultural and Economic Development
The “One Belt” component of the initiative will strengthen the Liangma River Cultural and Economic Belt. This phase includes the acceleration of key commercial projects like the Sina Weibo Esports Center and the introduction of new attractions such as a Ferris wheel in Chaoyang Park. The Liuliwan area is poised to become a nexus of activity, connecting five major commercial zones including Sanlitun and Yansha, thereby creating a diversified and multifunctional urban district.
As these projects progress, Chaoyang District remains committed to openness and collaboration, forging new connections with the global community and inviting people worldwide to partake in its promising future.
The “Two Rivers, One Belt” initiative is more than just an urban development project; it is a vision of a dynamic, integrated future that embraces the full potential of its waterfront heritage. With these ambitious plans, Chaoyang District is set to redefine what it means to be a world-class waterfront city.
