(Singapore, Aug 1, 2023) The ongoing Singapore Festival of Football has made a splash in the island country, drawing the attendance of a presidential hopeful and causing fans to use raffia strings for autographs.
On the night of July 29, businessman and potential presidential candidate George Goh was seen at the National Stadium for Liverpool’s open training session.
The 63-year-old presidential hopeful came to the stadium with his son. Both were dressed in red Singapore shirts.
Goh told local media that he is not necessarily a Liverpool fan, although he is aware of how big the club is. He last followed football closely during the 2022 World Cup.
Besides the presidential hopeful’s appearance, a July 30 TikTok video has also gone viral. In the 25-second video, Liverpool fans during the open training session at the National Stadium tried their hardest to get autographs from Liverpool stars like Mo Salah and Alisson Becker.
Since those seated higher up did not want to miss out on the opportunity to get their jerseys signed, they tied them on raffia strings before lowering them down the stands in hopes of getting them signed.
The Reds will have a blockbuster clash against Bundesliga champions FC Bayern Munich on August 2 at 7.30 pm for the Singapore Trophy.
The Singapore Festival of Football, from July 26 to August 2, is the city-state’s first large-scale international football event since 2019. Premier League clubs Tottenham Hotspur FC and Leicester City FC are being joined by Bundesliga powerhouses FC Bayern Munich and Serie A side AS Roma at the National Stadium for three action-packed matches.
In addition to world-class sporting action, spectators of all ages can enjoy the complete festival experience with a wide range of family-friendly fun activities and dining options on offer throughout the week at the Football Fan Interactive Festival Village at OCBC Square.
