(Singapore, Aug 11, 2023) – Singaporeans will go to the polls on September 1, a public holiday, to cast their votes for the next president, provided more than one person qualifies to run for the presidency, according to a press release by the Elections Department (ELD).
The ELD has announced that voters will know whether the election will be a walkover or not on Nomination Day, which falls on August 22.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has issued the Writ of Election.
He said in a Facebook post on Friday, “I’m sure we will hear more from the candidates themselves during the campaign period.”
“The President represents all Singaporeans and stands as a symbol of our unity and aspirations. Listen carefully to what each candidate has to say, assess their views, and make a wise choice for the best candidate for this crucial role.”
As of now, there are four presidential hopefuls: Former Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, 66; entrepreneur George Goh, 63; former GIC Chief Investment Officer Ng Kok Song, 75; and former NTUC Income Chief Tan Kin Lian, 75.
Mr. Tharman launched his bid for the presidency on July 26, while Mr. Goh and Mr. Ng announced theirs last week, and Mr. Tan today.
Applications for these certificates will close on August 17. The nomination of candidates will take place at the auditorium of the People’s Association (PA) at 9 King George’s Avenue. Each candidate is required to pay a deposit of S$40,500.
